One-loop infrared rescattering by enhanced scalar fluctuations during inflation

We show that, whenever the perturbations of some field are excited during inflation by a physical process on sub-horizon scales, they unavoidably generate, even through gravitational interactions alone, a significant resonant IR cascade of power down to scales that are of the order of the horizon at that time (we denote these scales as near IR). We provide general analytic one-loop results for the enhancement of the IR power of the curvature perturbation generated by this effect, highlighting the role played by the resonance. We then study a number of examples in which the excited state is: (i) an isocurvature field, (ii) the curvature perturbation itself, (iii) a mixture of curvature and isocurvature fluctuations driven to an excited state by their coupled dynamics. In the cases shown, the cascade significantly modifies the near IR part of the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation with respect to the linear theory, indicating that this effect can impact the phenomenology associated with a variety of mechanisms considered in the literature, notably concerning primordial black holes and gravitational waves.

A constrained NILC method for CMB B mode observations

The Internal Linear Combination (ILC) method is commonly employed to extract the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal from multi-frequency observation maps.However, the performance of the ILC method tends to degrade when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is relatively low, particularly when measuring the primordial B-modes to detect the primordial gravitational waves. To address this issue, an enhanced version of the ILC method, known as constrained ILC, is proposed.This method is designed to be more suitable for situations with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by incorporating additional prior foreground information.In our study, we have modified the constraint Needlet ILC method and successfully improved its performance at low SNR.We illustrate our methods using mock data generated from the combination of WMAP, Planck and a ground-based experiment in the northern hemisphere, and the chosen noise level for the ground-based experiment are very conservative which can be easily achieved in the very near future. The results show that the level of foreground residual can be well controlled. In comparison to the standard NILC method, which introduces a bias to the tensor-to-scalar ratio (r) of approximately 0.05, the constrained NILC method exhibits a significantly reduced bias of only around 5 × 10-3 towards r which is much smaller than the statistical error.

Backreaction of axion-SU(2) dynamics during inflation

We consider the effects of backreaction on axion-SU(2) dynamics during inflation. We use the linear evolution equations for the gauge field modes and compute their backreaction on the background quantities numerically using the Hartree approximation. We show that the spectator chromo-natural inflation attractor is unstable when back-reaction becomes important. Working within the constraints of the linear mode equations, we find a new dynamical attractor solution for the axion field and the vacuum expectation value of the gauge field, where the latter has an opposite sign with respect to the chromo-natural inflation solution. Our findings are of particular interest to the phenomenology of axion-SU(2) inflation, as they demonstrate the instability of the usual trajectory due to large backreaction effects. The viable parameter space of the model becomes significantly altered, provided future non-Abelian lattice simulations confirm the existence of the new dynamical attractor. In addition, the backreaction effects lead to characteristic oscillatory features in the primordial gravitational wave background that are potentially detectable with upcoming gravitational wave detectors.

Solution for cosmological observables in the Starobinsky model of inflation

Significance of Fabry-Perot Cavities for Space Gravitational Wave Antenna DECIGO

DECIGO is a future Japanese project for the detection of gravitational waves in space. To conduct various scientific missions, including the verification of cosmic inflation through the detection of primordial gravitational waves as the main objective, DECIGO is designed to have high sensitivity in the frequency band from 0.1 to 10 Hz, with arms of length 1000 km. Furthermore, the use of the Fabry-Perotcavity in these arms has been established for the DECIGO project. In this paper, we scrutinize the significance of the Fabry-Perot cavity for promoting this project, with a focus on the possibility of observing gravitational waves from cosmic inflation and binary compact star systems as indicators. The results show that using the Fabry-Perot cavity is extremely beneficial for detecting them, and it is anticipated to enable the opening of a new window in gravitational wave astronomy.

An analytical approximation of the evolution of the primordial curvature perturbation in the ultraslow-roll inflation: an extended study

Our analytical approximation will help the model building in primordial black hole and gravitational wave physics.

Monomial warm inflation revisited

Abstract We revisit the idea that the inflaton may have dissipated part of its energy into a thermal bath during inflation, considering monomial inflationary potentials and three different forms of dissipation rate. Using a numerical Fokker-Planck approach to describe the stochastic dynamics of inflationary fluctuations, we confront this scenario with current bounds on the spectrum of curvature fluctuations and primordial gravitational waves. We also obtain purely analytical approximations that improve over previously used ones in the small dissipation regime for the amplitude of the spectrum and its tilt. We show that only our numerical Fokker-Planck method is accurate, fast and precise enough to test these models against current data. We advocate its use in future studies of warm inflation. We also apply the stochastic inflation formalism to this scenario, finding that the resulting spectrum is the same as the one obtained with standard perturbation theory. We discuss the origin and convenience of using a commonly implemented large thermal correction to the primordial spectrum and the implications of such a term for a specific scenario. Improved bounds on the scalar spectral index will further constrain warm inflation in the near future.

Imprint of inflationary gravitational waves and WIMP dark matter in pulsar timing array data

Motivated by the recent release of new results from five different pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments claiming to have found compelling evidence for primordial gravitational waves (GW) at nano-Hz frequencies, we consider the prospects of generating such a signal from inflationary blue-tilted tensor power spectrum in a specific dark matter (DM) scenario dubbed as Miracle-less WIMP. While Miracle-less WIMP, due to insufficient interaction rate with the Standard Model (SM) bath gets thermally overproduced, inflationary blue-tilted gravitational waves (BGW) in compliance with PTA data, conflict cosmological observations if reheat temperature after inflation is sufficiently high. Both these issues are circumvented with late entropy dilution, bringing DM abundance within observational limits and creating a doubly-peaked feature in the BGW spectrum consistent with cosmological observations. The blue-tilted tail of the low-frequency peak can fit NANOGrav 15 yr data, while other parts of the spectrum are within reach of present and future GW experiments.

Primordial gravitational waves in non-minimally coupled chromo-natural inflation

We consider inflation driven by an axion-like particle coupled to an SU(2) gauge sector via a Chern-Simons term. Known as chromo-natural inflation, this scenario is in tension with CMB observations. In order to remedy this fact and preserve both the symmetries and the intriguing gravitational wave phenomenology exhibited by the model, we explore the non-minimal coupling of the axion-inflaton to the Einstein tensor. We identify regions of parameter space corresponding to a viable cosmology at CMB scales. We also highlight the possibility of a non-trivial chiral gravitational wave signal at small scales.

Primordial Gravitational Wave- and Curvature Perturbation-Induced Energy Density Perturbations

We study the second-order scalar and density perturbations generated by Gaussian curvature perturbations and primordial gravitational waves in the radiation-dominated era. After presenting all the possible second-order source terms, we obtain the explicit expressions of the kernel functions and the power spectra of the second-order scalar perturbations. We show that the primordial gravitational waves might affect second-order energy density perturbation δ(2)=δρ(2)/ρ(0) significantly. The effects of primordial gravitational waves are studied in terms of different kinds of primordial power spectra.

Induced gravitational waves from flipped SU(5) superstring theory at nHz

The no-scale flipped SU(5) superstring framework constitutes a very promising paradigm for physics below the Planck scale providing us with a very rich cosmological phenomenology in accordance with observations. In particular, it can accommodate Starobinsky-like inflation, followed by a reheating phase, which is driven by a light “flaton” field, and during which the GUT phase transition occurs. In this Letter, we extract for the first time a gravitational-wave (GW) signal which naturally arises in the context of the flipped SU(5) cosmological phenomenology and is related to the existence of an early matter era (eMD) driven by the flaton field. Specifically, we study GWs non-linearly induced by inflationary perturbations and which are abundantly produced during a sudden transition from the flaton-driven eMD era to the late-time radiation-dominated era. Remarkably, we find a GW signal with a characteristic peak frequency fGW,peak depending only on the string slope α′ and reading as fGW,peak∝10−9(α′α⁎′)4Hz, where α⁎′ is the fiducial string slope being related directly to the reduced Planck scale MPl as α⁎′=8/MPl2. Interestingly enough, fGW,peak lies within the nHz frequency range; hence rendering this primordial GW signal potentially detectable by SKA, NANOGrav and PTA probes at their very low frequency region of their detection bands.

Observable gravitational waves from hyperkination in Palatini gravity and beyond

We consider cosmology with an inflaton scalar field with an additional quartic kinetic term. Such a theory can be motivated by Palatini R+R2\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$R+R^2$$\\end{document} modified gravity. Assuming a runaway inflaton potential, we take the Universe to become dominated by the kinetic energy density of the scalar field after inflation. Initially, the leading kinetic term is quartic and we call the corresponding period hyperkination. Subsequently, the usual quadratic kinetic term takes over and we have regular kination, until reheating. We study, both analytically and numerically, the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves generated during inflation and re-entering the horizon during the subsequent eras. We demonstrate that the spectrum is flat for modes re-entering during radiation domination and hyperkination and linear in frequency for modes re-entering during kination: kinetic domination boosts the spectrum, but hyperkination truncates its peak. As a result, the effects of the kinetic period can be extended to observable frequencies without generating excessive gravitational waves, which could otherwise destabilise the process of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We show that there is ample parameter space for the primordial gravitational waves to be observable in the near future. If observed, the amplitude and ‘knee’ of the spectrum will provide valuable insights into the background theory.

Tracking the multifield dynamics with cosmological data: a Monte Carlo approach

We introduce a numerical method specifically designed for investigating generic multifield models of inflation where a number of scalar fields ϕ K are minimally coupled to gravity and live in a field space with a non-trivial metric 𝒢> IJ (ϕ K ). Our algorithm consists of three main parts. Firstly, we solve the field equations through the entire inflationary period, deriving predictions for observable quantities such as the spectrum of scalar perturbations, primordial gravitational waves, and isocurvature modes. We also incorporate the transfer matrix formalism to track the behavior of adiabatic and isocurvature modes on super-horizon scales and the transfer of entropy to scalar modes after the horizon crossing. Secondly, we interface our algorithm with Boltzmann integrator codes to compute the subsequent full cosmology, including the cosmic microwave background anisotropies and polarization angular power spectra. Finally, we develop a novel sampling algorithm able to efficiently explore a large volume of the parameter space and identify a sub-region where theoretical predictions agree with observations. In this way, sampling over the initial conditions of the fields and the free parameters of the models, we enable Monte Carlo analysis of multifield scenarios. We test all the features of our approach by analyzing a specific model and deriving constraints on its free parameters. Our methodology provides a robust framework for studying multifield inflation, opening new avenues for future research in the field.

Overview of gravitational waves: Formation, polarization and detection

Gravitational waves (GWs) are reliable for proving general relativities. Also, they can be used in detecting physics phenomena in the universe. Motions of bodies make spacetime curved, and then gravitational waves are formed. Additionally, GWs can be produced in the early universe. A mathematical description of gravitational waves derived using linearized theory and transverse-traceless gauge shows GWs polarizations and the relationship between perturbation and strain. GW signal was first detected in the binary system PSR1913+16. Data presented an orbital decay, which followed general relativity’s prediction. Direct detections today, designed according to GWs properties, are carried out by resonant detectors, interferometers, and pulsar timing arrays. Noise reduction is a key to accurate detection. Furthermore, analyzing the B-mode cosmic microwave background can be used in detecting primordial gravitational waves.

Minimal length scale correction in the noise of gravitons

In this paper we have considered a quantized and linearly polarized gravitational wave interacting with a gravitational wave detector (interferometer detector) in the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) framework. Following the analysis in Phys. Rev. Lett. 127:081602 (2021), we consider a quantized gravitational wave interacting with a gravitational wave detector (LIGO/VIRGO etc.) using a path integral approach. Although the incoming gravitational wave was quantized, no Planck-scale quantization effects were considered for the detector in earlier literatures. In our work, we consider a modified Heisenberg uncertainty relation with a quadratic order correction in the momentum variable between the two phase space coordinates of the detector. Using a path integral approach, we have obtained a stochastic equation involving the separation between two point-like objects. It is observed that random fluctuations (noises) and the correction terms due to the generalized uncertainty relation plays a crucial role in dictating such trajectories. Finally, we observe that the solution to the stochastic equation leads to time dependent standard deviation due to the GUP insertion, and for a primordial gravitational wave (where the initial state is a squeezed state) both the noise effect and the GUP effects exponentially enhance which may be possible to detect in future generation of gravitational wave detectors. We have also given a plot of the dimensionless standard deviation with time depicting that the GUP effect will carry a distinct signature which may be detectable in the future space based gravitational wave observatories.

Cosmic string gravitational waves from global U(1)B−L symmetry breaking as a probe of the type I seesaw scale

In type I seesaw models, the right-handed neutrinos are typically super-heavy, consistent with the generation of baryon asymmetry via standard leptogenesis. Primordial gravitational waves of cosmological origin provides a new window to probe such high scale physics, which would otherwise be inaccessible. By considering a global U(1)B−L extension of the type I seesaw model, we explore the connection between the heaviest right-handed neutrino mass and primordial gravitational waves arising from the dynamics of global cosmic string network. As a concrete example, we study a global U(1)B−L extension of the Littlest Seesaw model, and show that the inevitable GW signals, if detectable, probe the parameter space that can accommodate neutrino oscillation data and successful leptogenesis, while respecting theoretical constraints like perturbativity of the theory. Including CMB constraints from polarization and dark radiation leaves a large region of parameter space of the model, including the best fit regions, which can be probed by GW detectors like LISA and ET in the near future. In general, the GW detectors can test high scale type I seesaw models with the heaviest right-handed neutrino mass above 2.5 × 1014 GeV, assuming the perturbativity, and 7 × 1013 GeV assuming that the coupling between the heaviest right-handed neutrino and the U(1)B−L breaking scalar is less than unity.

Optimization of Quantum Noise in Space Gravitational-Wave Antenna DECIGO with Optical-Spring Quantum Locking Considering Mixture of Vacuum Fluctuations in Homodyne Detection

Quantum locking using optical spring and homodyne detection has been devised to reduce the quantum noise that limits the sensitivity of the DECIGO, a space-based gravitational-wave antenna in the frequency band around 0.1 Hz for the detection of primordial gravitational waves. The reduction in the upper limit of energy density ΩGW from 2×10−15 to 1×10−16, as inferred from recent observations, necessitates improved sensitivity in the DECIGO to meet its primary science goals. To accurately evaluate the effectiveness of this method, this paper considers a detection mechanism that takes into account the influence of vacuum fluctuations on homodyne detection. In addition, an advanced signal processing method is devised to efficiently utilize signals from each photodetector, and design parameters for this configuration are optimized for the quantum noise. Our results show that this method is effective in reducing quantum noise, despite the detrimental impact of vacuum fluctuations on its sensitivity.

Primordial stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds from a sharp feature in three-field inflation. Part I. The radiation era

The detection of a primordial stochastic gravitational wave background has the potential to reveal unprecedented insights into the early universe, and possibly into the dynamics of inflation. Generically, UV-complete inflationary models predict an abundance of light scalars, so any inflationary stochastic background may well be formed in a model with several interacting degrees of freedom. The stochastic backgrounds possible from two-field inflation have been well-studied in the literature, but it is unclear how similar they are to the possibilities from many-field inflation. In this work we study stochastic backgrounds from more-than-two field inflation for the first time, focusing on the scalar-induced background produced during the radiation era by a brief turn in three-field space. We find an analytic expression for the enhancement in the power spectrum as a function of the turn rate and the torsion, and show that unique signatures of three-field dynamics are possible in the primordial power spectrum and gravitational wave spectrum. We confirm our analytic results with a suite of numerical simulations and find good agreement in the shape and amplitude of the power spectra. We also comment on the detection prospects in LISA and other future detectors. We do not expect the moderately large growth of the inflationary perturbations necessary for detection to cause a breakdown of perturbation theory, but this must be verified on a case-by-case basis for specific microphysical models to make a definitive claim.
